This is an ancient sea-port and historic market town. It was once of greater importance than Portsmouth and played a major part in defending the south coast against the threatened French invasion. The old charm of the cobbled streets near the old quay are quite magnetic, and host many georgian style shoppes and restaurants. Lymington is still a busy fishing village and the quay provides the visitor with views of a constant stream of river traffic. There is also a lively street market in the high street on Saturday mornings.
